This near-north neighborhood is one of the closest neighborhoods to downtown and was one of the original “streetcar suburbs,” explaining the tight grid pattern of its streets. It has a great deal in common with the adjacent and contemporary neighborhood, Old North Knoxville, in terms of housing and street pattern. Sidewalks and beautiful homes make it a very pleasant and walkable neighborhood.

As in many pre-automobile neighborhoods, small lots and street parking are common features of Fourth and Gill. In 1985, the neighborhood was added to the National Register of Historic Places; Central United Methodist Church and Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church inside the neighborhood are also on the National Register.
