Originally a Fountain City boy, Joe and his family (Wendy, Harper, and Dalton) now live in the Forest Heights neighborhood in Bearden. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1999 where he marched in the Pride of Southland Band and managed to earn a degree while attending as few classes as possible. In the band he was in that part of the T where the football team nearly runs into the band while turning toward the sideline.

For several years Joe managed a large regional independent bookstore in Jackson, Mississippi where he did all manner of business – recruiting, training, marketing, event planning, and of course reading all of the books, and while this was tons of fun it was not in Knoxville and Knoxville was simply where he wanted to be and live.

His love of historic houses has its roots in visits to his grandparent’s Fountain City Colonial and in dating his wife Wendy when she lived in the Pickle Mansion in Fort Sanders. As an armchair Knoxville historian and major Jack Neely fan, Joe combines his love of Knoxville, business experience, and love of historic houses to help clients in all of Knoxville’s historic neighborhoods through the home buying and selling process.

Joe was wonderful and easy to work with. I’ve worked with many realtors over the years and have had many that are pushy and difficult to trust. Joe was extremely knowledgeable and trustworthy. I hope to work with him again soon!

“The market this spring was incredibly competitive and oftentimes discouraging. However, Joe was everything we could have hoped for. His knowledge of the area and housing trends gave us a leg up as we were crafting offers. I highly recommend him if you’re looking for unique but solid older homes in Knoxville. Thanks, Joe!

Oakwood-Lincoln Park

“Very helpful & patient while navigating our transition when we were out of the country.

“Working with Joe has been such a wonderful experience for our family. He is extremely thorough, motivated, and professional, but also very fun and never once did we feel rushed or pushed into anything. He will go into a basement to check out the mechanical unit with you and the next minute he will be playing soccer with your kids so you take photos and spend a moment imagining a home’s potential. Joe has the best of what you’d want in a realtor and I would recommend him to any and everyone looking for a new home. Thank you Joe!”

Fountain City

“This is the third house I’ve worked on with Joe. I cannot overstate what a positive experience I have had each time. He listens closely to the client’s needs and preferences and knows the market well. I recommend Joe, and First Neighborhoods enthusiastically and without reservation.

Joe was always there for us and worked diligently in assisting us with our home selection and purchase. His advice was spot on and his strategy for the offer on the home allowed us to succeed on the purchase without undue risk. We are confident in saying that had anyone else been our agent, we would not have been able to buy our new home. We highly recommend Joe Hickman to anyone wishing to purchase a home in the Knoxville area.

West Knoxville

“Joe was wonderful! I’m a long-distance buyer so that added complexity to an already complicated process. But Joe dealt with it fine and made himself totally available the week I flew in to see the house and create my list of renovation projects. He’s calm, easygoing, and knowledgeable. I’m very happy!”

Fourth and Gill

“Joe is an amazing real estate agent. He knows the ins and outs of the Knoxville market and helped us find a great location and a house within our budget which holds enormous potential. He was also very generous with his time and honest with us every step of the way. We very highly recommend him!

“I cannot say enough wonderful things about Joe. He was such a great resource and ally to us throughout this stressful process. He was so thoughtful in his responses and took time to walk us through anything that we were worried or confused about….With us coming from the suburbs, knowing next to nothing about these houses, we felt very protected and supported. We could not be happier with our gem of a house we bought.”
